Vivian Morgan Helps Shine a Light on Appendix Cancer
At Salyersville Nursing & Rehabilitation, we know that nurses do much more than provide care. They listen, encourage, comfort, educate and advocate for the people they serve. One of those special nurses is Vivian Morgan, whose own unexpected health journey has given her an even deeper understanding of what it means to be an advocate.
After more than 30 years of caring for others as a nurse, Vivian found herself in a role she wasn’t accustomed to—being the patient.
Earlier this year, Vivian underwent imaging for an unrelated medical concern. The scan unexpectedly revealed an abnormality involving her appendix. Further testing led to a diagnosis of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN), a rare tumor of the appendix.
For Vivian, the experience was unexpected and life-changing.
“As a nurse for more than 30 years, I’ve spent much of my life caring for other people, so suddenly being the patient was a very different experience.”
Her journey has given Vivian a new perspective—not only on her own diagnosis, but on the importance of advocacy, education and compassion for anyone facing an unfamiliar or rare illness.
Turning a Personal Journey Into Advocacy Vivian is grateful for the care she received from Dr. Prakash Pandalai, who she says provided expertise, reassurance and compassion throughout her treatment.
That experience reinforced something Vivian has spent her career knowing: having someone in your corner matters.
As she began sharing her story, Vivian’s daughter, Whittney Allen, also became involved in appendix cancer advocacy. Whittney began volunteering with the Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation (ACPMP Research Foundation), helping support efforts to raise awareness and assist others affected by this rare disease.
Together, Vivian and Whittney turned a difficult family experience into an opportunity to help others.
Their advocacy recently helped bring statewide attention to the disease when Gov. Andy Beshear signed a proclamation recognizing August 2026 as Appendix Cancer Awareness Month in Kentucky.
A Reminder to All of Us
Vivian’s story is especially meaningful to the residents, families and staff of Salyersville Nursing & Rehabilitation because it reflects something we see every day: the importance of having someone who will speak up, listen and stand beside you.
Whether advocating for a resident’s needs, helping a family understand a difficult situation, or simply offering encouragement during a challenging day, advocacy is at the heart of compassionate care.
Vivian’s journey reminds us that even when life takes an unexpected turn, our experiences can become a source of strength and hope for others.
We are proud to recognize Vivian—not only for the many years she has dedicated to caring for others, but for the courage she has shown in sharing her story and using her experience to advocate for greater awareness.
Thank you, Vivian, for continuing to care, educate and advocate. Your voice matters, and your story may help someone else feel a little less alone.
